Basements being cold, damp, and dark places is not a rare problem to an average home. Basement moisture is common in most houses, however, it could be a sign of something being wrong. Basement moisture can cause structural damage and become a hazard to your health along with causing other issues in your home. It is important to understand why this moisture occurs.

To start off, what is basement moisture? Here is a list of factors that are signs that moisture is in your basement:
Damp, humid air
Water on the floor
Water trickling out of walls
Condensation on walls and floor
Stained walls
Moldy odors
Rotting columns and headers
Deteriorating carpet/wood
But where is this moisture coming from? Basement moisture tends to be a cause of either rain/groundwater, interior moisture, or ventilation with humid, outside air.
Rain and Ground Water
The moisture could easily be a result of water from outside of your home making its way in. This usually occurs due to homes not having proper grading, downspouts, or gutters.
Interior Moisture
Water can also be in your basement if it was already introduced there. This includes appliances such a dryers, showers, humidifiers, or even concrete.
Ventilation with Humid, Outside Air
Often times when it is humid or warm out and basement windows are left open, the humid air flows into the cool basement as condenses the walls and floors.
